In many cases, stress or anxiety turns out to be the culprit behind erectile dysfunction. Life-changing traumas or even everyday stress can cause erectile dysfunction. In such a case, seeking help of a professional therapist is the right step. Talking about your emotional issues with a licensed therapist can relieve you of sexual anxiety and help you achieve higher confidence in your relationship. Mostly, a few brief sessions are more than enough.

Medications

In many cases, medications are the only available option. These medications include oral drugs, injections and drugs that are inserted directly into the tip of the penis.

The most common medicines prescribed to patients of erectile dysfunction are:

  • Avanafil
  • Sildenafil
  • Tadalafil
  • Verdanafil

These medicines are taken orally anywhere from 20 minutes to 24 hours before having sex, depending on the type of drug and the severity of erectile dysfunction. These medicines however cannot be used for more than once a day. These medicine have proven to be effective in more than 80% of the cases. However, these medicines can also result in side effects. Common side-effects include muscle ache, headache, temporary blurring of vision, stuffy nose etc. These medicines are strictly prohibited for patients who are taking nitrate drugs to treat heart disease as it can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. It is important to talk to your doctor about all the medicines you are already taking for treating other diseases you may be suffering from.

Injections and Suppositories

For patients that are experiencing an advanced stage of erectile dysfunction, medical health professionals prescribe injectable drugs like Alprostadil. This medicine helps increase blood flow to the penis which causes an erection in a few minutes. The medicine can be administered in two ways:

  • Injection
The medicine is administered using a syringe that delivers the medicine to a side of the penis. The method has proven to be highly effective however in some cases, prolonged erections and scarring have come out to as a major side-effect.
  • Suppositories
This procedure, called medicated urethral system for erections, uses a small device that inserts a small pallet inside a penis. However, this system is found to be less effective than administration of the drug through injections.

Surgery

Surgery remains the last resort and is only prescribed in extreme cases. Surgery to treat erectile dysfunction is carried out either to place an implant (prosthesis) in the penis or for vascular reconstruction

  • Implants

Prostheses or implants work by restoring firmness in penis. These implants come in two types:

Malleable Implants: These are a pair of bendable rods placed into the penis. These implants are manually adjusted into a position suitable for sex every time.

Inflatable Implants: These are basically a pair of tubes placed in the penis and are connected to a squeezable pump that is placed in the scrotum. One needs to squeeze the pump to get an erection.

  • Vascular Reconstruction

Vascular reconstruction surgery repairs blood vessel blockages to improve blood flow to the penis and reduce blood leakage from the penis and the surrounding structures.
